This is one of my all-time favorite wines. Nancy and her daughter Kate discovered it at Brookhaven in May of 2011- as I was moving from Willow to where I now am. Felicia and I went to Brookhaven every other day and tried a new variety- I don’t recall which ones were not good(I think the merlot left a lot to be desired, and the cab was just ok). I do, however, remember when she discovered this one through a friend of hers and brought it over. Oh boy, love at first drink. Dylan got in the habit of bringing me bottles of it if I was not having a great day(between September of 2011 to present, not a lot of great days, unfortunately).
Cupcake, I believe, is a newer vineyard into the wine circle. Red Velvet has quite a blend going here- mostly Zinfadel, some Merlot, some Cab, and a little bit of Syrah. I like this blend! They have it exactly right. It’s got some snap, crackle, and pop to it without tasting like ass. Not always the case with blends. If the merlot were the predominant factor here, this would have been heartier and likely lost some of the fruitiness of the wine itself. There is a slightly sweet finish to it, but that’s to be expected somewhat with zinfadel so heavily represented here. The main flavors I taste are blueberry and strawberry. A lot of red wine blends I’ve had in the past(many- I like variety) are not as smooth and more full-bodied. I like the merlot a ton, so that’s likely why those blends appealed so much to me. This is a whole different red wine blend; one I’m glad I have had the pleasure of trying and drinking time and time again. It’s not as heady, more flavorful and slightly sweet. It also carries with it the win of a good buzz. One glass and I’m more relaxed than dental surgery. Two glasses and I’m coming up with asinine Facebook rants. It’s a great wine to pair with BBQ anything, steak, and cheeses you have never heard of(Bellavitano, anyone?). Highly recommended! Give it a spin, you won’t be disappointed.
